Joseph Johnson IV, M.D. was destined to be a physician. In fact, he never thought of doing anything else. He comes from generations of doctors, dating all the way back to the 1800s. However, turning his studies to the subspecialty of gastroenterology was a little more clandestine. Dr. Johnson reminisces about his early days in medicine, “[Choosing gastroenterology] was sheer accident. I ended up training under two men who were Nobel Prize Laureates in GI, their enthusiasm for the field was contagious.”
And so, after completing his undergraduate work at Yale, and his Medical Doctorate at the University of Texas Health Science Center, he accepted a Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of North Carolina. During his career, Dr. Johnson served as Staff Physician at Audie Murphy VA Hospital and Memorial Hospital at the University of North Carolina.
Dr. Johnson even had a short stint on a local television show in San Antonio, a daily TV talk show with a 10-minute segment where he helped viewers better understand and care for their health. Though the program is no longer on the air, he still makes it his mission to spread the word about colon cancer prevention. Dr. Johnson has a story that is powerful—he is a colon cancer survivor himself.
He says that his own experience battling colon cancer only enhanced his passion for the cause, which he passes on to his patients in daily practice, “When you’re sick or struggling with your health, the last thing that you want to do is sit in a waiting room or be shuffled from room to room and talk to doctors who are so obviously busy. My experience only magnified the very human element that must exist in the practice of medicine. I am dedicated to being responsive, on time, and focused on my patient’s care during every moment I spend with them and working for them.”
